Rules of the Lakes

Tennessee prides itself on the many spectacular lakes and water opportunities. We thought it would be good to point out a few helpful rules of the lake and navigational tips.

General Safety

* All boats must carry a horn or whistle capable of producing a four-second blast that's audible for at least 1/2 mile.

* All boats must carry a U.S.C.G. approved fire extinguisher.

* A personal flotation device for each passenger and a minimum of two on board. A throwable PFD is required for boats over 16 feet long.

* Boats should always carry flares or day signals.

* Children under 13 must wear a life jacket on a boat whenever it is in motion, unless they are inside the cabin.

No-Wake Zones

* boaters may not operate a vessel fast enough to create a wake within 50 yards of a boat launching area, bridge, dock, pier, marina, boat storage service area.

Rafting

* One or two vessels may be tied or anchored within 100 yards of the shore, if they are 50 yards from any other anchored vessel. Up to 10 vessels may be reafted together between 100 and 300 yards from shore, but must be at least 200 yards from other vessels. Eleven or more vessels may raft togehter at 300 yards or more from shore.

Age Requirements

* Persons from 12 to 16 years old may only operate a motorboat with a motorboating or PWC safety ID card or if they are under the direct supervision of someone at least 18.

* Person under 12 may not operate a motorboat unless they under the direct supervision and control of a person 18 or over.

Dumping

* Boat toilets may be dumped only at pumpout stations located at various marinas around the lake.
